３巻の出版が未定で、なおかつ、昔翻訳がで始めた時に、１巻しか出なかった過去に危惧される知人がいた。

そこで、英日機械翻訳プロジェクトにいた経験と、
ISO/IEC のeditorと、JISの翻訳の主査の経験と、
U.C. BarklayのSF アニメ研に知人がいた過去と、
SF作家に知り合いがいる地縁とで、
もし、翻訳できそうになかった時に助っ人となるべく準備を始めるとどうなるかを検討してみよう。

課題は３つ。関連著作物の入手、用語、絵。

著者の他の作品の入手

翻訳する場合に、原著者の、一つ前の作品と一つ後の作品は、最低限読んでいないとまずい。
その作品が、どういう流れの中にあるかがわからずに、単独で読んで、理解できるとは限らない。

翻訳者としては、原則、著者の全作品を読んでおきたい。
どこに、どういう罠を仕掛ける人かを知らずに訳せない。

初出が雑誌であれば、雑誌の原文と、本になった時の違いの確認。
初出が雑誌であれば、その雑誌のその作品の前３年分の他の作家の記事の確認。

以下、３巻予定の著者と著作の資料を集めようとした。
作家一人がwikiに見当たらない。
作品の項目も、おざなりな記事以外で充実しているものは少し。

どうやって資料を集めるか、途方にくれる。

機械翻訳で予備訳を作るのであれば、下記、３雑誌は全部電子化してあることが前提。

用語

SFの用語は、科学用語と、空想用語の両方を網羅するとよい。

EthernetのEther(https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/エーテル　) のように、科学用語だが空想用語であるものはよい。

錬金術の特定の時代にだけ使われた用語とか、空想小説でしか出てこない用語とか、よっぽどSF好きでないと知らない用語をどう整理するか。

特に、特定の著者が好きな用語空間を想定していないと、真逆に訳す可能性はすごく高い。上下、左右などの方向も、どちら向きかで真逆になる。視点が定まらないと訳せない。

幸い、SF研所属の知人は、放送＞音響＞演劇＞無線＞鉄道＞天文＞SF> で多少はいる。

やっかいなのは宗教用語なのだろうか。
キリスト教は旧約聖書も新約聖書も英語で読んだことがある。
読解率は３０％くらい。

イスラム教の用語がでてきたらなんともならないかも。

もっとやっかいなのは文学用語。
シェークスピアとか英語で読破していない。

英語で文学読んだのは、赤毛のアンとハリーポッターくらい。
ドリトル先生は、英語の造語、生物用語が解読できず断念している。

ドリトル先生、英語で読めずにSF翻訳できるとは思えない。

科学用語（歴史）

1960年代には、自分で科学技術文献を読んでいない。
後年になってから、1960年代に発行された科学技術文献を読んだものもあるがごく一部。1960年代の科学用語の本流を全く知らない。

科学用語（分野）

科学技術のうち、数学、物理学、計算機科学に偏った知識しかない。
生命科学の用語は、2000年以降の遺伝子解析が進んでから。
用語構造が歴史的にも頻繁に変わっており、把握できる気がしない。

化学がその次に弱い。

科学用語（略号）

１文字の略号は一か八か。
２文字の略号は分野が特定できないと爆死。
３文字の略号は辞書に載っていなければだめ。

絵・図

原作者または挿絵家の当時の絵・写真があるとよい。
雑誌掲載作品であれば、雑誌に掲載されたものと、書籍に掲載された時点で絵が違うのであれば、両方。

著者が好きな作家の作品、影響を受けた作品の、絵もあるとよい。

傾向がわからないと、全く別の概念を提示する可能性がある。
Aという単語があって、意味がわからないとき、Aの絵さえあれば、どう訳しても、その絵がAであることが読者に伝われば良い。

「涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱」

という小説が、読んでも、どこがどう面白いのかさっぱりわからなかった。３巻目まで来て、ほぼ苦痛の領域に近かった。そこでアニメを拝見した。京アニ品質というか、すぐに内容が理解できた。
登場人物の間合いがわかったからだ。

文字を追いかけていても、登場人物巻の間合いがわかるかどうかは、登場人物が思い当たるかどうか。

はじめ、上橋菜穂子の作品も、挿絵がなければ、自分の頭の中で迷走していたかもしれない。

東アジアの人が主人公なのだろうと、ひとまず想定して読み進めた。
