Freenomの復活 無料から有料へ

はじめに

2026年9月22日、Freenomから「Expired Domain Notice」のタイトルのメールを受信しました。

内容を確認したところ、利用しているtkドメインの期限が切れたので、有効期限切れを望まない場合は今すぐドメインを再登録してくださいといった内容でした。

そして、気づいたときには登録していたtkドメインの名前解決ができなくなっていました。

2024年に「Freenomの終焉」という記事を執筆しました。Freenomでは、2022年にMetaによって行われた訴訟などを背景に、新規ドメインの取得はできなくなったものの、tkドメインについては引き続き無料で利用することができていました。

しかし、これまで長年にわたり無料で利用していたtkドメインもついに終わりがきました。

現在の状況

念の為、サポートに問い合わせて確認したところ、無料でのドメイン更新は利用できなくなり、継続して利用するためには、年間€9.95での有料更新が必要と回答をいただきました。

察するにFreenomはレジストリ運営を含むドメイン事業から撤退していたと思われましたが、突如としてドメインの販売を開始したと思われます。

調べたところ、2026年7月23日にDomain Inciteによって書かれた「Freenom is back, but no longer free」の記事を読むと、Freenomの復活について記載がありました。

Freenomは当初のビジネスモデルに基づき、これまで無料で利用できたtkドメインを回収して収益化を狙っていると思われます。

従って、tkドメインを引き続き利用するためには、課金が必要です。

ドメイン移管

今の時代、これまでのFreenomのように無料でTLD直下のセカンドレベルドメインを取得するサービスは存在しないと思います。

引き続き、無料でドメインを利用したい場合、以下の様なサブドメイン形式のサービスが利用可能です。

上記以外にもサブドメイン形式で利用可能なドメインサービスは存在します。

サーバ証明書の発行及び失効作業

ドメイン移管を行うにあたって、WebサーバでHTTPS通信を行っている場合は、新規にサーバ証明書の発行及び既存の証明書に関する失効などの作業が発生します。

本記事では、参考までにLet's Encryptの例について記載しています。なお、環境はNginxになります。

ドメイン移管後、certbotを使用して新規にサーバ証明書を発行する場合は、以下のコマンドを実行します。

$ certbot certonly --nginx -d <New Domain>

Requesting a certificate for REDACTED

Successfully received certificate.
Certificate is saved at: /etc/letsencrypt/live/REDACTED/fullchain.pem
Key is saved at:         /etc/letsencrypt/live/REDACTED/privkey.pem
This certificate expires on 2026-12-22.

Certbot has set up a scheduled task to automatically renew this certificate in the background.

サーバ証明書のみ発行して自分でWebサーバの設定を行う場合は、certonlyオプションを指定します。

次にNginxの設定ファイルを編集し、以下の設定値などに記載しているドメイン名を新しいドメイン名に変更して保存します。

• server_name
• ssl_certificate
• ssl_certificate_key

Nginxの設定ファイル編集後、サービスを再起動して終了です。

サーバ証明書の失効については、以下のコマンドを実行します。また、失効に合わせて削除も行えます。

$ certbot revoke --cert-name <Old Domain>

おわりに

Freenomについて、最初はmlドメインを使用して期限切れに伴い、その後はtkドメインを長年利用してきました。
