The HQT-6430 exam (Hitachi Vantara Qualified Professional, Content Platform for Cloud Scale Administration) tests whether you can run Hitachi Content Platform for cloud scale (HCP-CS). HCP-CS is Hitachi's software-defined object store, and applications talk to it through the Amazon S3 API. The exam has 35 questions in 60 minutes, a 65% passing score and costs USD 100. Because HCP-CS is S3-compatible, much of the exam reads like an S3 exam with Hitachi's architecture, replication, encryption and support tooling added on top. This guide covers each topic area, with boto3 examples you can run against any S3-compatible endpoint.

That is about 100 seconds per question. The official HQT-6430 exam description (PDF) is the authority on scope, and the HQT-6430 syllabus page puts the eight topic areas on one page.
The eight topic areas
The blueprint gives no weights, so treat the areas as roughly equal. The S3 API and versioning areas are the most hands-on, and support activities (logs, Jaeger, Prometheus, REST API, chargeback) is where administrators who haven't run a real cluster tend to lose marks.
Overview: object storage and HCP-CS concepts
Know the three storage types the exam contrasts:
| Type | Unit | Access | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Block | Fixed-size blocks | SCSI, NVMe, FC | Databases, VM disks |
| File | Files in a hierarchy | NFS, SMB | Shared folders, home directories |
| Object | Object = data + metadata + key, in a flat bucket | HTTP (S3 API) | Backups, archives, data lakes, media |
HCP-CS stores objects in buckets and keeps their metadata separately from the data. That separation is why it can scale to very large object counts. Data lands on storage components, which can be Hitachi HCP S Series nodes, Amazon S3, or other S3-compatible targets. One namespace can therefore span on-premises and cloud capacity.
Configuration
- Consoles: the System Management console (cluster, instances, services, security) and the Object Storage Management console (storage components, users and buckets, chargeback), plus a self-service S3 console where users create credentials and buckets.
- Service management: services run on the cluster's instances and can be scaled out, moved or restarted from System Management.
- Identity: HCP-CS integrates with Active Directory or LDAP so users sign in with directory accounts, and group membership decides admin rights.
- Adding Amazon S3 as a storage component: supply the endpoint, region, bucket, and access and secret keys, then mark the component active so data can be placed on it.
Connecting applications through the S3 API
Applications use standard S3 SDKs. Only the endpoint changes:
import boto3
from boto3.s3.transfer import TransferConfig
s3 = boto3.client(
"s3",
endpoint_url="https://s3.hcpcs.example.local", # HCP-CS S3 endpoint
aws_access_key_id="AKIA...", # from the S3 console
aws_secret_access_key="********",
)
s3.create_bucket(Bucket="invoices")
# Object with user metadata (stored as x-amz-meta-* headers)
s3.put_object(Bucket="invoices", Key="2026/11/inv-1001.pdf",
Body=open("inv-1001.pdf", "rb"),
Metadata={"customer": "acme", "doc-type": "invoice"})
# Large file: boto3 switches to multipart upload above the threshold
cfg = TransferConfig(multipart_threshold=64 * 1024 * 1024, multipart_chunksize=16 * 1024 * 1024)
s3.upload_file("archive-2026-10.tar", "invoices", "archive/2026-10.tar", Config=cfg)
print(s3.head_object(Bucket="invoices", Key="2026/11/inv-1001.pdf")["Metadata"])
Exam points: user metadata travels as x-amz-meta-* headers and is returned by HEAD. Multipart upload splits large objects into parts that are uploaded in parallel and then completed. ACLs grant access to buckets and objects (private, public-read and so on). Lifecycle policies move or expire objects automatically:
s3.put_bucket_lifecycle_configuration(
Bucket="invoices",
LifecycleConfiguration={"Rules": [{
"ID": "expire-temp",
"Filter": {"Prefix": "tmp/"},
"Status": "Enabled",
"Expiration": {"Days": 30},
"AbortIncompleteMultipartUpload": {"DaysAfterInitiation": 7},
}]},
)
The AbortIncompleteMultipartUpload rule is worth remembering. Abandoned multipart uploads keep consuming capacity until a rule like this cleans them up.
Versioning, retention and event notifications
s3.put_bucket_versioning(Bucket="invoices", VersioningConfiguration={"Status": "Enabled"})
# Object Lock must be enabled when the bucket is created
s3.create_bucket(Bucket="audit-logs", ObjectLockEnabledForBucket=True)
s3.put_object(Bucket="audit-logs", Key="2026/11/05.log", Body=b"...",
ObjectLockMode="COMPLIANCE",
ObjectLockRetainUntilDate="2033-11-05T00:00:00Z")
| Concept | What it means |
|---|---|
| Versioning | Every overwrite creates a new version. A delete adds a delete marker and keeps the old versions |
| Object Lock, governance mode | Users with special permission can shorten or remove retention |
| Object Lock, compliance mode | Nobody, including administrators, can delete the version before the retain-until date |
| Legal hold | Blocks deletion with no end date until the hold is removed |
Event notifications send a message when objects are created or deleted, for example to start an indexing or virus-scan pipeline. HCP-CS ships a JSON generator script that builds the notification configuration for you. Know what the generated document contains: the event types, an optional prefix or suffix filter, and the destination.
Architecture
- Instances are the servers (physical or virtual) that make up the cluster. Services run on them as containers, and a small set of master instances keeps cluster coordination available.
- Services you should be able to name and place include the S3 Gateway (handles S3 requests), the metadata services (store and coordinate object metadata), the data lifecycle and policy services (run lifecycle and replication work), a message queue that connects services, the key management service (an encryption Vault), and the monitoring stack (Prometheus metrics and Jaeger tracing).
- Metadata partitions: object metadata is split into partitions spread across instances, and partitions split as they grow. That is how the system scales object count.
- HTTPS port forwarding: the exam expects you to know how to reach internal service consoles securely from an admin workstation, usually through SSH or HTTPS forwarding, rather than exposing them directly.
Replication
| Feature | Direction | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| Bucket Sync-To | HCP-CS bucket to an external S3 bucket | Copy data to AWS for DR or cloud analytics |
| Bucket Sync-From | External S3 bucket to HCP-CS | Pull data from the cloud, or migrate into HCP-CS |
Both are configured per bucket with a JSON document. As with notifications, Hitachi supplies a generator script, so expect questions on what that JSON contains: the target endpoint, bucket, credentials, and optional prefix filters.
Data encryption
HCP-CS encrypts data at rest with keys held in its key management Vault. The concept the exam tests most is sealing:
- A sealed Vault cannot hand out keys, so encrypted data can't be read. That is the protective state after a restart or a deliberate seal.
- Unsealing needs the unseal keys that were issued when encryption was set up. Store them separately and safely, because losing them means losing access to the data.
- Seal the Vault deliberately if you suspect a compromise. Unseal it again to restore service.
Support activities
| Task | Tool |
|---|---|
| Collect logs for support | Log collection from System Management, scoped by instance and service |
| Follow one request across services | Jaeger distributed tracing |
| Graph metrics such as request rate, latency and capacity | Prometheus (queries and graphs) |
| Automate administration | Management REST API with OAuth tokens |
| Bill or show back usage per user or bucket | Chargeback reports |
A Prometheus query like the following is the kind of thing you should be able to read, even if the exact metric names differ in your release:
sum by (bucket) (rate(s3_requests_total{method="PUT"}[5m]))
A four-week HQT-6430 study plan
| Week | Focus | Practical goal |

FAQ
How many questions are on the HQT-6430 exam?
35 questions in 60 minutes, with a passing score of 65%.
Is HQT-6430 mostly about the S3 API?
The S3 API, versioning and Object Lock are a large part of it, but the exam also covers HCP-CS architecture, Bucket Sync replication, Vault-based encryption and support tools such as Jaeger and Prometheus.
What is the difference between Bucket Sync-To and Bucket Sync-From?
Sync-To copies objects from an HCP-CS bucket to an external S3 bucket. Sync-From pulls objects from an external S3 bucket into HCP-CS.
What happens when the HCP-CS KMS Vault is sealed?
Encryption keys are unavailable, so encrypted data can't be read until the Vault is unsealed with the unseal keys.
Can I practise for HQT-6430 without an HCP-CS system?
Partly. The S3 API, versioning, lifecycle and Object Lock behaviour can be practised on any S3-compatible store. The architecture, consoles, replication and encryption topics need the official course or HCP-CS documentation.
Exam-day checklist
- Object = data + metadata + key in a flat bucket, and user metadata goes in
x-amz-meta-*headers. - Multipart upload for large objects, plus a lifecycle rule to abort incomplete uploads.
- Object Lock needs a bucket created with it enabled. Compliance mode can't be overridden, governance mode can.
- Sync-To pushes to external S3 and Sync-From pulls from it, both configured with JSON.
- A sealed Vault means no keys and no reads. Keep the unseal keys safe.
- Jaeger traces requests, Prometheus graphs metrics, and chargeback reports usage.
If you can explain each of these and run the boto3 snippets from memory, you are ready for the HQT-6430 exam.
