You have a Semrush subscription. You can open the reports you need. But when you ask an AI agent to help with competitor research, someone still has to fetch the data and paste it into the conversation.

Does connecting that research mean paying for another API package?

While looking into this question, I came across BrowserAct's Semrush template. The idea caught my attention: keep the subscription you already use, turn a supported browser task into a callable tool, and let an application or compatible AI agent request the results.

What interested me was that even the basic SEO subscription could become useful inside an agent, through BrowserAct's API/MCP connection. For a small team, the same research tool could also be shared rather than passing the website login around.

What Caught My Attention About the BrowserAct Template

The interesting part, for me, is being able to reuse research without becoming the person who moves every report between tools.

Imagine preparing a content plan for a client. You have a target domain, competitors to investigate, and an agent helping you organize the findings. Each follow-up question can mean another trip to Semrush, another query, and another export.

BrowserAct offers a different handoff. You copy the Semrush template into your own Bot, connect your login, and run one of its supported research tasks. Once published, that Bot can be called through BrowserAct's API or exposed as an MCP tool. An application can request structured results; a compatible agent can call the tool as part of a conversation.

I can see the appeal for recurring work. The same task can be requested again with a different supported keyword or domain, rather than rebuilding the collection process. The template also removes the need to write the browser automation yourself.

What matters is whether it covers the report and fields you actually use. A reusable tool for one recurring task can be useful without reproducing the whole Semrush workspace.

It Connects a Browser Task—It Doesn't Unlock the Official API

BrowserAct's API calls your published Bot. It does not issue an official Semrush API key or turn your account into a higher Semrush plan.

That distinction helped me make sense of the offer. The Bot works with the browser task and data your account can access. MCP provides a way for an agent to discover and call that tool; the API provides a way for an application to submit the task and retrieve its results.

This is also why I would check existing Semrush MCP access first. Some subscriptions already include it, including Starter and certain SEO Classic plans. If the official connection already covers your research and the included units are sufficient, adding another tool may be unnecessary.

The BrowserAct route becomes more interesting when the webpage already gives you the research you need, but getting that research into your application or agent is still a separate job. You are evaluating a browser-based connection to a supported task, rather than buying every capability of the official API.

The Basic SEO Plan Can Be Enough for API/MCP Access

The useful comparison is whether the basic Semrush SEO plan already covers the research task. If it does, BrowserAct can make that task callable through API or MCP without upgrading Semrush solely for that connection. Looking at Semrush API pricing alongside this route, here is the monthly subscription comparison:

Route	Fixed monthly subscription	Connection available
Basic Semrush SEO + BrowserAct Basic	$139 + $16 = $155	BrowserAct API and MCP for supported webpage research tasks; 10,000 BrowserAct credits included
Semrush Starter	$199	Official MCP access and its included units
Semrush Advanced / Standard API route	Custom quote; API units purchased separately	Official Standard API access under the relevant subscription and unit package

For the same supported task, the $155 combination is $44/month below Starter, or $528 over 12 months at unchanged prices. If you already have the SEO subscription, the addition is just BrowserAct's $16/month. Runs draw from its included credits; only usage beyond that allowance or separately purchased services adds to this budget. This compares the connection needed for the task, not every feature in the plans.

There can be a second saving for teams. Where the account permits shared tool access and colleagues only need the research results, they can use the same Bot from their agents instead of buying separate Semrush web seats for those requests. The owner shares the MCP Server URL and matching API key privately; teammates do not need the Semrush web password. That combines two benefits: a basic-plan route to API/MCP and fewer separate seats for tool-only research.

For two, three, or five people, the numbers look like this. Headcount includes the owner; each extra SEO seat is $45/month on the entry SEO tier and Starter. The BrowserAct column models permitted tool-only sharing within the included credits, rather than separate Semrush workspace access for everyone.

People	Extra SEO seats/month	Basic SEO + web seats/month	Starter + SEO web seats/month	Basic SEO + BrowserAct/month	Difference vs. basic SEO + seats/month	Difference vs. Starter + seats/month
2	1 × $45 = $45	$184	$244	$155	$29	$89
3	2 × $45 = $90	$229	$289	$155	$74	$134
5	4 × $45 = $180	$319	$379	$155	$164	$224

For a five-person team, that is a conditional fixed-budget difference of $164/month against basic SEO with four extra web seats, or $224/month against Starter with those seats. These are alternative comparisons, not savings to add together; the seat prices cover SEO access, not additional AI Visibility licenses.

Members who need their own full Semrush workspace still need the relevant access. I would also check any official MCP entitlement already included in the existing subscription before choosing a new connection.

Getting Started Means Copying the Template and Importing a Session

The setup is short enough that I would start with one familiar query, rather than design an entire SEO system around it.

Open the Semrush template and select Create Editable Duplicate to make your own Bot.
In its browser settings, open Website login for a Standard Browser, then choose Import cookies.
Paste or upload your own valid Semrush session cookies in JSON or Netscape format, check that the browser is logged in, then publish and run a supported task.
Connect the published Bot through MCP or API when you are ready to use it outside BrowserAct.

If you are already signed in locally, cookie import gives you a way to bring that session into the Bot's browser. Cookies are login credentials: keep them private, and refresh the session when it expires. Semrush may still ask for verification.

First, create your own editable copy of the template.

Then open Browser settings in your copy. Under Website login, choose Import cookies to bring in your own session; use Standard Browser for the saved browser environment.

The Website Login guide covers session setup. The MCP setup guide covers connecting a compatible agent. Those are better places for the configuration details than a long detour here.

A Real Query From Codex: From a Keyword to an Editorial Decision

To give this idea a concrete check, I used the Semrush MCP tool from a Codex session to request a Keyword Overview for semrush api, using the United States database and requesting up to three records.

The request was straightforward: retrieve the keyword data first, then use it to consider what an article should answer. Codex called the BrowserAct Semrush tool, received a task ID, and retrieved the result after the task completed. The result reported a successful authenticated query and contained one keyword overview plus a separate set of SERP records.

Part of the query	What happened
Input	Keyword Overview; `semrush api`; United States database
Returned research	Search-volume, keyword-difficulty and CPC fields, plus SERP records
Useful detail	The returned SERP included Semrush's developer documentation and API help page
My editorial interpretation	A general API-reference article would overlap with those resources. I would focus this piece on the existing subscriber's connection options and added budget instead.

That last row is my interpretation, not a recommendation returned by Semrush. A small SERP sample does not settle a content strategy, but it gives the discussion something specific to work from. The agent has research to examine before suggesting an angle, rather than inventing demand or relying on a pasted summary.

This query used an already-connected Bot. It demonstrates the Codex-to-tool request and returned data; setting up your own login is still the separate step described above.

The BrowserAct result page for the query initiated in Codex. The overview is one primary record; the separate SERP entries are not shown in this excerpt.

What I Would Use It For—and Who Can Skip It

I would start with a research task that comes back every week, such as collecting supported domain-keyword records for a competitor review. The point is to make those records available to the agent doing the next part of the work.

For example, a content team could request records for a competitor domain, then ask its agent to group the returned keywords by relevance to the team's products. A keyword with strong traffic but no connection to the offer would go into a lower-priority group; one closely tied to a product could become a candidate for a content brief. That is a possible use of the returned data, not a claim that the Bot makes the content decision itself.

I would skip the extra setup for occasional lookups, tasks the template does not cover, or an existing official MCP connection that already works well. For a production application that needs specific API endpoints or service guarantees, I would compare the official API directly.

For repeated, supported research, though, this is a useful question to ask before changing a Semrush subscription: can the data I already pay to access reach the place where I need it?

If that sounds like your situation, explore the Semrush template and start with one task you already know how to check.

Key Takeaways

Having access to research and having the connection you need are separate questions. Check your existing subscription's rights first.
Compare added subscription costs, included allowances, and task coverage—not just plan prices.
A browser-based Bot and the official API are different services. Choose the route that fits the actual task.
Validate one supported task before committing to ongoing use; specifications alone do not establish real savings.
