What Reusing a Swap Deposit Address Reveals

If you reuse a crypto deposit address, anyone who can read that blockchain can group the payments sent to it. The address does not reveal your name by itself, but it creates a public trail that can connect separate trades. You can limit that link by following each swap’s deposit instructions carefully.

  • Repeated payments to one address are easy to group.
  • Amount and timing can help observers follow a swap across chains.
  • Fresh instructions and separate wallet addresses reduce some links.

What does deposit address reuse mean?

Deposit address reuse means sending funds to the same blockchain address on more than one occasion. An address is like a public account number: people can see transactions sent to it, though they cannot see your private keys.

A centralised exchange may give you a deposit address for an asset, and you might save it for later. If you send from your own wallet to that same address again, the public ledger shows both payments arriving at the same destination.

That connection can reveal a pattern, even if it does not prove who owns the sending wallet. For example, an observer may see that one wallet sent 0.1 BTC to an address on Monday and 0.05 BTC to it on Friday.

What can an observer connect?

Observers can group payments to the reused address and inspect what happens to funds afterwards. A blockchain explorer is a public website that displays this transaction history; it can show amounts, times, and later transfers.

They may also compare the sending address, timing, and amount with activity on another chain. This is a clue, not proof: a shared destination could serve many users, and matching amounts can happen by chance.

On Bitcoin, a wallet may combine several received chunks of bitcoin to make one payment. That can make the payment connect those chunks in the public record, even if they originally came from different sources.

Reuse does not charge an extra network fee, expose your password, or reveal your legal identity on its own. The privacy cost is that a repeated public address makes it easier to link activity that might otherwise look separate.

How does this affect a cross-chain swap?

A cross-chain swap starts with a payment on one blockchain and aims to deliver another asset on a different chain. Each chain records its own transactions, so observers may compare the deposit time and amount with a likely output payment.

When comparing a route in thor swap, check the deposit address and any memo, a short instruction attached to the payment. Follow the current quote’s details; a displayed address or memo may be valid only for a limited time.

For example, say you send 0.1 BTC, worth $6,000 for illustration, into a swap. The source chain records the deposit, and the destination chain records the resulting asset sent to your chosen wallet; matching timing and value can help connect those records.

The main edge case is a standing address used by many people. Reuse of that address links deposits to the same service endpoint, but does not by itself show that the customers share a wallet or identity.

What should you do before sending?

Use the exact deposit details shown for the swap you are making, and check the asset, network, amount, address, and memo before confirming. If the quote expires or you return later, get fresh instructions instead of assuming yesterday’s address still applies.

For funds you receive into your own wallet, use a new receiving address when your wallet offers one. Many wallets create these from the same recovery phrase, the secret backup used to restore the wallet, so a fresh address need not mean a new wallet.

I would treat every deposit instruction as trade-specific and save only the transaction record, not an old address as a shortcut. That small habit makes it less likely that unrelated swap activity gets grouped through an address you reused.
