経緯
2019/10/24現在、fontawesome ver.5.11.2のアイコンをCSS疑似要素で表示しようとしても豆腐になってしまいます。HTMLでは表示できるのですが、CSS疑似要素ではどうしても表示できません。font-weight,font-family,文字コードの再確認、ドキュメントの内容を1通り試すも豆腐でした。
解決
font-familyを"Font Awesome 5 Pro"にすることで表示することができました。
