🧠 How to Use AI Masking in Capture One
AI Masking allows you to automatically create masks for a subject or the background using AI.
Steps:
Open the Layers Tool
Go to the Layers panel in the right-hand tool tab.
Create a New Layer with AI Mask
Click the “+” (Add New Layer) button.
Choose “New AI Mask” from the dropdown.
Choose Mask Type
Capture One will analyze the image and offer options like:
Select Subject – isolates the main subject.
Select Background – isolates everything except the subject.
Refine the Mask (if needed)
Use the Brush, Eraser, or Refine Mask tools to fine-tune the edges.
The AI-generated mask is usually very accurate, even with complex areas like hair.
👤 How to Use People Masking in Capture One (v16.5 and later)
People Masking builds on AI Masking but provides much finer control over facial and body features.
Steps:
Go to the Layers Tool
Just like AI Masking, start by adding a new layer.
Select “New AI Mask” → “People”.
Wait for AI Analysis
Capture One scans the photo and detects people.
You’ll see options for specific regions:
Face Skin
Body Skin
Eyes
Brows
Lips
Hair
Select Areas to Mask
Check the boxes for the areas you want. For example, select only “Face Skin” if you want to even out skin tones, or “Hair” if you want to adjust highlights.
Apply Adjustments
With the mask applied, you can use exposure, color, clarity, and other adjustment tools just on that area.
Example: smooth out skin with the Clarity/Texture sliders, brighten eyes with Exposure, or change lip color using Color Editor.
✅ Quick Tip: Both AI Masking and People Masking are non-destructive. You can always refine, add, or remove parts of the mask later using standard masking tools.
