Read crypto transaction inputs as what a transaction consumes and instructs, and outputs as what execution creates or changes—but the exact meaning depends on whether the network uses UTXOs or accounts. That distinction settles most explorer confusion. Bitcoin gives you literal inputs and outputs; Ethereum-style networks such as Manta Network expose a call whose effects appear in token-transfer logs, contract traces, and changed balances. For a builder, the right question is not “what was the output?” but “which state transition did this call cause?”

Two meanings of “input” and “output”

In a UTXO system such as Bitcoin, an input spends an earlier unspent transaction output. Each input points to a previous transaction and output index, then proves the spender is authorized to use it. The new transaction creates outputs with amounts and locking conditions. The sum of inputs must cover the sum of outputs plus the fee; change usually returns to a new output controlled by the sender.

That is a literal accounting structure. The coins do not sit in an account balance waiting to be edited. They move from old outputs into new ones, and a transaction can have several inputs, several recipients, and a separate change output.

On Ethereum Mainnet and similar account-based networks, a transaction has no Bitcoin-style output list. Its input is better understood as the destination address, native value, and calldata supplied by the sender. Calldata selects a contract function and carries its arguments. Execution then changes storage, transfers tokens, emits logs, and may return data. Block explorers often label the resulting asset movements as outputs, but that is a human-readable summary, not a native transaction field.

Read an EVM transaction in three layers

The practical replacement for reading only the top-level “Value” field is a three-layer inspection.

Envelope: Check the sender, recipient contract, native value, gas limit, fee, nonce, and transaction status. A successful status means execution completed without reverting; it does not mean the intended business result occurred.
Instruction: Decode the input data. A call such as approve, transfer, deposit, or a router function tells you what the sender asked the contract to attempt and which addresses and amounts were supplied.
Effects: Follow token-transfer logs, event arguments, internal calls, and final balances. These show what contracts actually did during execution, including movements hidden behind a router or bridge contract.

On a Manta Bridge route, that separation matters because the top-level transaction may send no native coin at all while a token moves through several contracts. A bridge call can include an approval, a deposit into a gateway, a message or proof operation, and a later release on another network. The meaningful “output” is the resulting state on the destination side, not merely the first transaction row.

What the logs tell you—and what they do not

An ERC-20 Transfer event is useful evidence of a token movement: it names the token contract, sender, recipient, and amount. An Approval event records permission for a spender to use tokens later. Do not confuse the two. Approving a bridge or a router does not itself move funds.

Logs are emitted by contracts, so they are records of execution, not an independent balance database. For a reliable reading, confirm the token contract address, decimals, chain, and final balance. A token with six decimals and a token with eighteen decimals can display the same raw integer very differently. Also distinguish a successful approval from a successful transfer: a transaction can set allowance while leaving the asset untouched.

Internal calls explain another common surprise. The recipient in the outer transaction may be a router, while the actual token recipient appears only in a nested call. If a route involves Symbiosis Finance or another aggregation layer, inspect the decoded calls and logs rather than assigning the entire movement to the first contract you see.

A concrete reading habit for builders

Suppose a user moves a token from Ethereum Mainnet toward Manta Network. Start by recording the source chain and transaction hash. Then answer these questions in order:

Which account initiated the call, and which contract received it?
Was native value sent, or was the asset transferred through an ERC-20 contract?
Did the input call approve, transfer, deposit, swap, or route?
Which logs identify the token, amount, recipient, nonce, and bridge message?
What destination-side transaction or balance change proves completion?

This method makes multi-contract activity inspectable instead of mysterious. It also exposes the edge that matters most operationally: a source transaction can succeed while the destination action remains pending, fails later, or requires a separate relayer step. “Confirmed” is therefore a statement about one chain and one execution, not automatically about the whole cross-chain journey.

What to remember: Bitcoin outputs are spendable UTXOs. EVM “outputs” are reconstructed effects. Read calldata to learn intent, traces and logs to learn execution, and balances to verify the result.

FAQ

Why does a token transaction show zero native value?

Because the token is an entry in a contract’s ledger, not the network’s native currency. The transaction can send zero ETH or another native coin while calling an ERC-20 contract that moves tokens. Read the token-transfer logs and verify the token contract and amount; the top-level value field alone cannot answer what changed.
