BGPでは、インターネット上での各ASを識別するために
番号を割り当てています。この番号がAS番号

ISP以外にも、大企業、学術研究機関なども1つのASが割り当てられている。AS番号はICANNという組織によって、RIR（Reginal Internet Registry）にブロック単位で割り当てられる。日本ではJPINICやAPNICがAS番号の割り当てを管理しています。
