PowerVS and the x86-based IBM Cloud (VPC or Classic) are not connected by default.
There were several methods for connecting them, depending on the time period.
(1) Direct Link 1.0 era: before (2)
(2) Direct Link 2.0 era (manual configuration)
(3) Cloud Connection era (automatic configuration)
(4) PER era
For (2), a user orders Direct Link 2.0, and then create a support case and request to connect PowerVS environment to the Direct Link. The procedure is here.
For (3), when a user orders Cloud Connection, Direct Link 2.0 is automatically created in conjunction with it, and PowerVS and x86 IaaS are connected through automatic processing (no case required). The procedure is here.
As of July 2024, the situation is as follows
Newly created workspaces in PER-enabled datacenters are PER-enabled.
Workspaces created before PER was introduced should be configured as (2) or (3). These workspaces are not automatically migrated to be PER-enabled.
For the configuration of (2), a procedure to migrate to PER is provided. (*This migration procedure cannot be used for configuration (3).

There may be situations where you want to migrate to PER but are not sure whether your environment is (2) or (3), so this article describes how to distinguish between (2) and (3).
How to identify auto-configured Cloud Connections
First, how to identify (3)Cloud Connections (auto-configured).
By checking the following two points, you can confirm that it is an "automatically configured Cloud Connection".
1. The connection(s) is/are created on the Cloud Connections
screen on the customer portal.
https://cloud.ibm.com/power/cloud-connections
2. The Direct Link details screen has the following text.
The Direct Link details screen is displayed on the customer portal by selecting the connection with the same name as Cloud Connections from the list screen below.
https://cloud.ibm.com/interconnectivity/direct-link
This direct link is read-only. Link-specific actions must be initiated through the service provider portal.
How to identify manually configured Direct Link 2.0
Next, how to identify (2)Direct Link 2.0 (manually configured).
By checking the following two points, you can confirm that it is a "manually configured Direct Link 2.0".
1. Connections are not created on the Cloud Connections screen in the customer portal.
2. The Direct Link details screen does not say "This Direct Link is read-only".
The article about migrating Direct Link 2.0 (manual configuration) environment to PER environment is below.
