BIND9.9より、スレーブサーバのゾーンファイルはバイナリ形式となっており、そのままでは人が内容を目視で確認することはできない。named.confのzoneステートメントにを指定することで、、旧バージョンと同様にテキスト形式でゾーンデータを扱えるようになる。（パフォーマンスは多少犠牲になる）
