Classic uptime tools answer one question well: does this URL respond?
They ping https://yoursite.com, get a 200, maybe check that a HTML string exists, and go quiet. That is useful. It is also incomplete for modern sites — WordPress after a plugin update, Shopify after a theme deploy, Webflow after a CMS publish.
Because “up” and “looks right” are not the same thing.
What “green” uptime misses
A few failure modes we keep seeing on agency care books:
- HTTP 200, empty shell. The origin responds. The layout CSS never loads. Checkout / hero / pricing looks blank to a human.
- Soft 404. Marketing page returns 200 with “page not found” content after a CMS publish.
- Partial render. Third-party widget or A/B script dies; the DOM is there, the visible page is broken.
- SSL or DNS drift. Cert renewals and DNS answers that diverge by resolver — uptime can stay green while trust or routing is wrong.
If your care plan already sells “uptime monitoring,” those are the tickets that still land in Slack from the client: the site is up, why does it look like this?
What to watch instead
For a multi-site care book you usually want one layer that covers:
- Uptime — still needed, multi-region if you can.
- SSL + DNS — expiry, chain, and answer consistency.
- Visual regression — pixel / screenshot diffs on a short cadence (we run as often as every 15 minutes) so a deploy that “returns 200” but breaks the layout still pages you.
- One client-facing report — white-label status so the monthly care email is proof, not another vendor logo.
That stack is what we built Visual Sentinel for: agencies and product teams who already sell monitoring, and keep getting bitten by “up but broken.”
A simple rule for care teams
If a human would open a browser to confirm the page, an uptime ping alone is not enough.
Start with the pages that make money or trust — home, pricing, login, checkout — and add visual diffs next to the checks you already run. Keep the alert path the same. When a plugin update ships a blank cart, you want the care channel to fire before the client does.
