単調性とは

大きくなることはあっても小さくなることはない

変数xの値が大きくなるにつれてfが定める値f(x)が大きくなることはあっても小さくなることはない場合、この関数fを単調増加関数（monotonically increasing function）や単調非減少関数（monotonicallynon-decreasing function）などと呼びます。

関数の単調性は，考えている区間によります。

y=x^2という関数について考える。

  • 実数全体では，単調増加でも単調減少でもない。
  • x≥0 の範囲では単調増加
  • x≤0 の範囲では単調減少
