結論

  • Mac: できる
  • Windows: できない
    • 公開鍵登録とかしても無駄
    • ただし、以下の操作で関連付けは可能

Windowsでの関連付け手順

  • Git for windows などで適当にローカルにclone
  • GitHub Desktopで
    • add local repository
    • 先程ローカルにcloneしたパスを指定

たったこれだけでリモートブランチも参照可能になっているはずです。
リモートへのpushも問題なし。
