POWER8 on IBM Cloud IaaS (SoftLayer)
2016年3月29日よりIBM Cloud IaaS (SoftLayer)でOpenPOWERベースのPOWER8 C800Lシリーズが利用可能になりました。IBM Cloud IaaS (SoftLayer)のカスタマー・ポータルから以下の決め打ち4モデルが月額課金のベアメタル・サーバーとして利用可能です。
POWER8とは
POWER8は、IBMが2014年4月に発表したPower Architectureベースの64ビットマイクロプロセッサです。Power ArchitectureベースのCPUは、コンピュータの設計方式としては、RISCに分類されます。

**RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer)**とは、マイクロプロセッサの設計様式の一つ。「縮小命令セットコンピュータ」と訳される。個々の命令を簡略化することによりパイプライン処理(並行して複数の命令を処理する方式)の効率を高め、処理性能の向上をはかっている。業務用の高性能コンピュータなどで使われている例がある。SPARCシリーズやPowerPCシリーズが有名。対義語として、**CISC (Complex Instruction Set Computer)**があり、CISCは「複合命令セットコンピュータ」とも訳される。個々の命令を高級言語に近づけ、複雑な処理を実行できるようにすることで処理能力の向上をはかっている。パソコン用のCPUとしてあわせて9割以上のシェアを持つIntel社のx86シリーズとその互換プロセッサがこの型である。(IT用語辞典より)
IBMは、2013年8月にGoogle、Mellanox、NVIDIA、TyanとともにOpenPOWER Foundationを設立し、POWER8のプロセッサーの詳細、ファームウェア、ソフトウェアなどのPower Architectureに関連する技術を公開しました。現在、POWER8のアーキテクチャーは、自由なライセンスとして利用可能なため、メンバー企業は、POEWR8ベースのサーバーを独自に開発することができます。メンバー企業としては、Canonical、サムスン電子、Micron、日立製作所、Emulex、Fusion-IO、SK Hynix、Xilinx、Jülich Supercomputer Center、Oregon State Universityなどが参加しています。

スレッドとは、ソフトウェアやプログラミングなどの分野で、並列処理に対応したOS上でのプログラムの最小の実行単位をスレッドという。連続した処理の流れのことで、一つのプログラムが単一の処理の流れで実行されることを「シングルスレッド」(single threading)、複数のスレッドを同時に実行して並列に処理を進めることを「マルチスレッド」(multithreading)という。(IT用語辞典より)

IBM Cloud IaaS (SoftLayer)で提供されるPOWER8はOpenPower Foundationのメンバー企業であるTyan社により製造されました。OpenPower Foundationの設立目的でもある「将来のデータセンターやクラウドコンピューティングのための各ベンダーがカスタマイズしたサーバー、ネットワーキング、ストレージハードウェアを構築するための、サーバーベンダー用のエコシステムの創出」にしたがい、POWER on IBM Cloud IaaS (SoftLayer)で稼働するOSとしては、オープンなLinuxが採用されています。
OpenPower FoundationはPOWER8にオープンなプラットフォームであるLinuxを採用することで協調型開発モデルの実現を目指しています。POWER8 on IBM Cloud IaaS (SoftLayer)で提供されるモデル・ラインナップは、IBM Power Systemsとは異なりLinuxモデルのみです。IBM Power Systemsでは、OSとしてAIX、System i、Linuxが稼働するのに対して、Tyan社製のPOWER on IBM Cloud IaaS (SoftLayer)では、IBM Power SystemのプリコンフィグLinux専用機(S812L)に該当するスケールアウトモデルの2Uサーバーのみが提供されています。以下に、IBM Cloud IaaS (SoftLayer)で提供されるPOWERとIBM Power Systemsの違いをまとめました。

(補足2)IBM Power Systemsの運用管理ツール
・HMC (Hardware Management Console)とは、IBM Power Systemsサーバーの制御やLPARの作成を行うハードウェア管理コンソール。
・PowerVC (IBM Power Virtualization Center)とは、PowerVM/PowerKVM向けの仮想マシンの構築・管理を容易に行うための製品、OpenStack Kiloベース。
POWER8 on IBM Cloud (SoftLayer)とIBM Power Systemsの一番の違いは提供ラインナップです。IBM Power SystemsがAIX、System i、Linuxと幅広いプラットフォームをカバーするのに対し、POWER8 on IBM Cloud IaaS (SoftLayer)はOpenPower Foundationの設計思想に基づきLinuxにターゲットを絞っており、さらにクラウド・サービスとしての価格競争力を持たせるため低価格帯のモデルが採用されています。なお、IBM Cloud IaaS (SoftLayer)で提供される**C812L(Tyan製)とIBM Systemsが販売するS812L(IBM製)**の違いは、基本的には、製造ベンダーとBIOSの違いだけで、ハードウェア・スペックとしての大きな違いはありません。
オーダーしてみる
IBM Cloud IaaS (SoftLayer)のアカウントを作成後、カスタマー・ポータルからオーダーできます。オーダーの仕方はx86のベアメタル・サーバーや仮想サーバーと同様で、利用したいサーバーを選択し、ウィザードにしたがえばOKです。
今回は、月額$1,210.00のC812L-Sをオーダーしました。

オーダー開始から約1時間20分でプロビジョニングが完了しました。プロビジョニング完了後は、その他のサーバーと同様に、カスタマー・ポータルから運用管理できます。構成情報は以下のとおりです。
IBM Cloud IaaS (SoftLayer)が提供する管理用SSL VPNに接続すれば、IPMI経由でKVMコンソールを起動することができます。
[Action] -> [KVM Console]を起動するとAmerican megatrends社のMegaRAC Remote Managementが起動し、ここからハードウェアの管理が可能です。
OSには、x86系Ubuntuと同様にクライアントからSSHでログインできます。

ベンチマークしてみる
POWER8とIntel (Haswell)サーバーの価格性能比を比較するため同価格帯($1,009.75)でほぼ同等スペックのx86ベアメタル・サーバーDual Intel Xeon E5-2690 v3 (24 Cores, 2.60 GHz, 64 GB RAM) をオーダーし、ベンチマークを実施しました。
ベンチマーク・ソフトには、UNIX/Linux分野で広く使われているSysBenchというオープン・ソースのツールを用います。SysBenchでは、以下6種類のベンチマーク・テストを行うことができます。

- cpu - CPU performance test
- memory - Memory functions speed test
- threads - Threads subsystem performance test
- mutex - Mutex performance test
- oltp - OLTP test
SysBenchのインストール
POWER8、Haswellの両サーバーにapt-getでsysbenchをインストールします。

SysBenchによるCPUベンチマーク
SysBenchでCPUのベンチマークを実施しました。SysBenchで用いられるCPUテストでは、シンプルな素数判定アルゴリズムが用いられており、指定した最大探索数以下でいくつの素数があるかを測定する演算が行われます。10000以下の素数を1スレッドで探索する計算をPOWER8、Haswellでそれぞれ実効すると以下のような結果になりました。

POWER8では、1スレッドの場合、合計処理時間は3.0991s、処理時間は、最短0.31ms、平均0.31msで全体の95%が0.31ms以内に処理されているという結果になりました。続いて、Haswellでも同じ計算を実行しました。

合計処理時間は11.8788s、処理時間は、最短1.18ms、平均1.19msで全体の95%が1.19ms以内に処理されているという結果になりました。
1スレッドで比較すると、POWER8とHaswellで計算にかかった時間を比較すると、POWER8では3.0991sかかったところ、Haswellでは11.8788sとなり約4倍の性能差が出ました。続けて、スレッド数(num-threads)を64スレッドまで変化させたときの合計処理時間を測定してみます。

POWER8とHaswellでsysbenchのCPUベンチマークについてスレッド数による変化をグラフにすると以下のような結果になりました。スレッド数を1-64まで増加したとき、POWER8、Haswellともに32スレッド付近までは並列性能が向上していくようです。
SysBenchによるMariaDBベンチマーク
次は、データベースのパフォーマンスを測定するためSysBench MariaDBのベンチマーク・テストをします。IBM Power SystemsのS822Lとx3650 M4 IvyBridgeのベンチマークによれば、MariDBで約2.2倍のトランザクション処理、PostgreSQLではXeonの約2倍のスループットを達成しています。

POWER8 on IBM Cloud IaaS (SoftLayer)でどれくらいのパフォーマンスが出るかを実際に確認してみます。
前提要件となるパッケージをインストールします。
