Previously windows could only be accessed by their number.
以前はウィンドウはウィンドウ番号でしかアクセスできなかった。
previouslyを辞書で引くと「前もって、あらかじめ」という意味が出てくるが、この例文のように「以前は」という使い方もできる。
formerlyもほぼ同じように使える：
Formerly all dyes came from nature.
昔は染料はすべて天然のものであった.
