Quick Tip — Use the Wipeout Command to Temporarily Hide Details in AutoCAD

Posted at

The Wipeout command lets you create a white mask area to temporarily hide objects behind it without deleting the original data — very useful when you need to add notes or highlight a specific area in your drawing.

How to use it (step by step):

Activate the command: type WIPEOUT → Enter.

Draw the mask area: click multiple points to create a closed polygon around the area you want to hide.

Or use an existing polyline: type P and select the polyline as the boundary.

Press Enter to finish. After creating the Wipeout, you can insert TEXT or MTEXT on top of it to make annotations stand out.

Tips & notes when using Wipeout:

Use MOVE or STRETCH to adjust the position/size of the Wipeout; use ERASE to remove it when no longer needed — this won’t affect the hidden objects.

Avoid stacking too many Wipeouts on top of each other, as it may clutter the drawing and increase file size.

Always check with plot preview before printing to ensure important details aren’t hidden; in older AutoCAD versions, Wipeout may display incorrectly — in that case, consider updating or using alternatives like Mask Block.

In short: Wipeout is a small but powerful tool when you need to clean up an area for annotations or highlight information without losing your original data — quick, editable, and practical for many technical drawing scenarios.
