はじめに
IT業界は日々新しい技術が生み出され、またそれらに新たな名前が付与されています。
そんな中でも「え、これってそういう意味だったの？」というものが結構あるので、まとめてみようと思います。
「意外でもなんでもなくない？」といった意見もあるかと思います。
実際、個人的な感覚で選んでいます。
用語・語源
Ajax
「Asynchronous JavaScript And XML」の略称であり、Webアプリ開発をしている皆様にはおなじみの概念かと思います。

実はこれ、水洗トイレの呼び名だったりします。
時は16世紀、イングランド王国、エリザベス1世の治世の時代、John Haringtonという廷臣が水洗トイレを発明し、これに「Ajax」と名付けました。
もともと「jakes」という、トイレを示すスラングがあったようで、これをもじって命名したようです。
# ところで、トイレのことを「WC」と略しますが、これについて書くと本題からかなり外れてしまうので割愛します。

Invention of the toilet
Around this time, Harington also devised Britain's first flushing toilet – called the Ajax (i.e., a "jakes", which was an old slang word for toilet). It was installed at his manor in Kelston. In 1596, Harington wrote a book called A New Discourse upon a Stale Subject: The Metamorphosis of Ajax about his invention.
語源云々言いつつも実は、Webアプリで言うところのAjaxが、上記を意識して命名されたかどうかは分かりません。

アメリカには「Ajax」という洗剤がありますので、恐らく、これにかけて命名したのではないかと推測しています。

それと当時はXMLでのデータ通信において、SOAPはそれなりに使われていたかと思いますので、これも意識していたんじゃないかと。
上記のblogは、公開後、大きな反響があってQ&Aを更新しているようですが、
「Does Ajax you meant relate to a kind of cleaning product?」みたいな質問はなかったようです。
# 若しくは、くだらない質問だと判断されて黙殺されたか…
Ansible
言わずと知れた構成管理ツールです。
管理対象のサーバにエージェントをインストールしなくて済むのが良いですね。

SF小説に出てくる超光速通信機が語源であることは聞いたことがある方もいるかと思います。
ではいったいこれはどのような小説なのでしょうか。
アーシュラ・K・ル＝グウィンという作家の作品が初出となります。
「エンダーのゲーム」（オーソン・スコット・カード著）が初出ではありません。
Wikipediaによると、初出は1966年の"Rocannon's World"だそうです。

これは日本では、ハヤカワ文庫SFから「ロカノンの世界」として1989年に出版されています。
現在は絶版になっているようですが、古本で簡単に手に入れることが出来ます。

どのような作品かは読んでみるのが一番です。
個人的には、SFとファンタジーの混じり合った世界観がとても良いと思います。
ファンタジーでよく語り継がれているような英雄譚が、実はオーバーテクノロジーを持った異星人の活躍だった、みたいな。
その惑星の地理・気候・生命体、種族・文化・風土などが緻密に考察された上で、
登場人物・場面が描かれているので、まるでその惑星を実際に探索しているようなリアリティがあります。
よく、文化人類学的な雰囲気があると言われますが、まさに文化人類学者の手記のような雰囲気があります。
# こういう視点は、ル＝グウィン作品すべてにおいて共通していると思います。
と言いつつも「ロカノンの世界」は、後期作品にみられるようなシビアな視点・葛藤は薄く、結構冒険活劇してますので軽く読めると思います。

公式見解としては、ネイティブアメリカンのApache族への敬意を込めて命名したとのことです。
が、有名なのは2つ目の、「a patchy server」の方ではないかと思います。
「Abount the Apache HTTP Server Project」にも書いてありますが、ApacheはもともとNCSA httpdのパッチ群として提供され始めたものです。
これがpatch files, patchy serverと呼ばれた、という経緯ですね。

boot(動詞)
コンピュータを立ち上げる時に「ブートする」という表現をしますが、これはもともと、ブーツを履きやすくするために引っ張る部分(bootstraps)から来ているようです。
bootstrapsは靴紐ではありません。

ではなぜ、どの様な経緯で、コンピュータの起動プロセスがbootstrappingと呼ばれるようになったのか、実は正確なところは分かっていないようです。
諸説あるようです。
まず、英語圏の有名なパラドクスとして、
「pull oneself up by one's bootstraps」というものがあります。
一見出来そうに見えて出来ない、ばかばかしい方法／実現不可能な方法を意味するものとして用いられていたようです。
その後、このフレーズは別の意味あいで使われるようになり、
1922年ごろには、他の助けを必要とせず自立的に自分を改善していく方法、という意味で用いられたようです。

The saying "to pull oneself up by one's bootstraps"[3] was already in use during the 19th century as an example of an impossible task. The idiom dates at least to 1834, when it appeared in the Workingman's Advocate: "It is conjectured that Mr. Murphee will now be enabled to hand himself over the Cumberland river or a barn yard fence by the straps of his boots."[4] In 1860 it appeared in a comment on philosophy of mind: "The attempt of the mind to analyze itself [is] an effort analogous to one who would lift himself by his own bootstraps."[5] Bootstrap as a metaphor, meaning to better oneself by one's own unaided efforts, was in use in 1922.[6] This metaphor spawned additional metaphors for a series of self-sustaining processes that proceed without external help.[7]
どうも、大きく以下の2種類の意味合いで用いられていたようです。
- 実現不可能／ばかばかしい方法
- 自立的に自己自身を改善していく方法
ここで、初期のコンピュータの起動プロセスについて考えてみます。
- CPU/RAM/IOのみのコンピュータの場合
- 電源投入直後はRAM上にはプログラム・データは無い
- プログラムを外部記憶装置からロードするためには読み込みプログラムが必要
- 読み込みプログラムをメモリ上にロードするためには何らかの読み込みプログラムが必要
という状況になるため、自分自身では全く満足に動くことはできません。
このような状況は、1つめの意味での「pull oneself up by one's bootstraps」を連想させます。
# 実際には、備え付けのトグルスイッチ等で、1バイトずつコードを書き込んでいき、入力が完了したら実行するというような形で動かします。
# パンチカード／テープなどの外部記憶装置からデータを読み出してRAMにロードする、その後ロードした内容を実行する、といったコードを書くこともあったと思います。
- 外部記憶装置等からプログラムをRAM上に自動的にロードする機構がある場合
- 電源投入し、既定のボタン等を押すと、外部記憶装置からデータを読み込む専用回路が動作する
- 外部記憶装置からRAMへのプログラムのロード完了後、CPUが初期化され、既定のメモリ番地からの処理が開始される
- 必要に応じて、さらに別の入力装置からプログラムをロードし、より複雑な処理を実行する
こちらは2つめの意味での「pull oneself up by one's bootstraps」を連想させます。

上記はいずれも推測ですが、恐らくコンピュータ黎明期には上記のような状況が多くあり、
当時関わっていた人たちにはみな「これってまさにpull itself up by its bootstraps状態だな」
という感覚があったんじゃないかと思っています。
で、bootstrappingという語を誰ともなく使い始め、自然に浸透していったのではないかと。

Javaアプリの管理ツールの定番です。

歴史は新しく、1960年代前半にイディッシュから輸入されたようです。

PuTTY
Windows用のSSH/Telnetクライアントですね。
日本だとTera Termの人気が根強い気がしますが、英語圏ではPuTTYが人気あるような気がします。

gettyの対義語、一種のplutonium Teletype、という話もあるけれどもコメントできないとのことで。

番外編：Pac Man
ITとは関係ないのですが、個人的に好きなくだりなので書いておきます。
Pac Manはナムコの有名なゲームですが、もともと英語表記はPuck-Manを想定していたようです。
ホッケーのパック（puck）に似てるから、ということで。
しかしながら、落書きされて「P」が「F」に変えられてしまうんじゃないかと懸念されたため、Puck ManではなくPac Manになったようです。
The result was a game he named Puck Man[48] as a reference to the main character's hockey puck shape.[49] Later in 1980, the game was picked up for manufacture in the United States by Bally division Midway,[45] which changed the game's name from Puck Man to Pac-Man in an effort to avoid vandalism from people changing the letter 'P' into an 'F' to form the word fuck.
