たぶんUbuntuの場合だけ。
/etc/nsswtich.conf
hosts: files dns
dnsが入っているかを確認する。ubuntu-desktopとかをインストールすると、何か別の文字列がfileとdnsの間に入っていて、これを消すと直る。
バックアップ取らずに編集して、「何か別の文字列」などと言う始末。
