Bash の here strings <<< を試しました。文字列を小文字化する例を行なっています。
$ word="Japan"
$ word="$(tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]' <<< ${word})"
$ echo $word
japan
なお、POSIX シェルで同じことを行うには、
$ word="Japan"
$ word="$(echo $word | tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]')"
