1年とちょっと、英語で後輩指導してみた

昨年の記事の続きです。
あれから一年経ちました。え、もう１年？

ことのあらまし

昨年、インドから来たエンジニアさんが後輩になりました。
それについては昨年のアドベントカレンダーに書いたので、まずはそちらをお読みください。

2ヶ月間、英語で後輩指導してみた

現在の英語スキル

そりゃあメキメキ成長しましたよ！　嘘です、見栄を張りました

昨年に自分が書いた記事と比較すれば間違いなくスキルは伸びていると思います。

昨年よりかはスムーズに文章の読み書きができるようになりましたし、件の後輩さんと英語でおしゃべりするにしてもハードルが低くなった気がしています。
（まあ私の場合は言語に関係なく誰と話すのでも緊張したりするんですねどね、コミュ障なので…）

語彙も増えました
whether, I wonder / I was wondering, Go ahead とかそのあたりの使い方がわかるようになりました。
アプリのアーキテクチャみたいなこともコードレビューで説明できるようになりました。

しかし未だに後輩さんが喋った内容を完璧には聞き取れていないですし、書いてもらったことを読むのにも辞書が手放せない上に時間もかかります。
彼女の言いたいことを全部理解できるようになるには、まだまだまだまだ精進が必要そうです。

後輩の成長具合

日本語が話せるようになってますよ！

チーム内でも（英語で話したいというメンバーを除いては）日本語でコミュニケーションをとっています。すごい。
漢字を覚えるのが大変そうですが、きっとそのうちたくさんの漢字を覚えてしまうのではと思っています。

そしてFlutterで要求機能の実装ができるようにもなりました！
加えて、学んだことをMediumでも発信したりしています。すごいですね！これが職業エンジニア1年目とは！

実践したこと a.k.a. Tips

読み聞き

巷にはたくさんの英語学習教材がありますが、私はそういうのを使う時間があったらコードを書いたりしていたい人間なので全然使えてません（お察しの通り真面目に勉強できる人間ではない）。

それでもこの本は良かったです。一部しか読めてないですが、それでも役に立ちました。

• 最低限の単語力でもてっとりばやく英語が話せる――日本人1万人を教えてわかったすぐに話せる50の方法
  • 半分くらいしか読んでないですが、今でもよく使うフレーズを学ぶことができました

音声教材（？）を聞き取るのも効果あった気がします。

• NCIS seriese
  • 刑事ドラマです
  • 母親がこれ好きでよく観てるんですが、隣で私は聞き取りの練習に使ってます
• Amazon Prime Musicで聞ける、英訳された音楽
  • Amazon Prime Musicには「歌ってみた」的な英語の曲が結構あります
  • 日本語の歌詞を知っている曲を選んで、なんと言っているのか聞き取ろうとするのに使ってます
  • Rachieさんの A cruel angel's thesis とか好きです
  • AmaLeeさんの The edge of dawn も良い (ファイアーエンブレムをプレイしたこと無いですが)

GrammarlyとDeepLは神

英作文するならGrammarly と DeepLは必須です。

Grammarlyで正しい綴りとか、 the なり in なり on なりの使い方を書きながら学べます。
書き上がったらDeepLにかけて、表現したいことを表現できているか確認するのがおすすめです。

GoogleChromeの翻訳機能を使う

英語学習の話なのに変だって？
しかし私は英文を読むことの一番の敵は面倒臭さだと思っています。

私は英語のページを開いたらば、真っ先にGoogleChromeの翻訳機能を使っています。

ご承知の通り、訳文はちんちくりんな日本語になっているので結局は翻訳機能を切って読む必要が出てきます。
が、そのときにはすでに文脈をだいたい理解できているでしょうから、ワタシ的には面倒臭さを減らした状態で読むことができています。

（日英）翻訳をしない

英作文をするとき、まずいきなり英語で書き始めるのが良いと思っています。

英語で考えて英語で書くわけです。

というのも、先に日本語を考えてから英語に翻訳するのは、すでに書いた日本語に当てはまる言葉を探してくるのが大変なうえに時間がめちゃくちゃかかるわけです。これが気力を失わせて、結局は作文を諦めることにも繋がります。
知らない単語や熟語を使って文章を書けるわけがないので、現在の語彙で書ける文章をひねり出すほうが良いと思うわけです。

この記事も英語で先に書いています。書き上がってから日本語に翻訳しています。

実践に勝る練習なし

プルリクで何かを説明したり、
1on1でお話したり、
Slackのチャンネルで英語で話したり…

そういうことが私の英語力を育ててくれました。
キツイですがめちゃくちゃ効きます。

良かったこと

英語でコミュニケーションがとれる！という自信がつきました。
きっと英語ネイティブな小学生よりも英語喋れてない気しかしないですが、それでも自分の英語スキルは伸ばせるんだとわかったことが収穫かなと。

次は発話と聞き取りのスキルの方を伸ばして、海外カンファレンスに行ったりしたいですね！

2ヶ月間、英語で後輩指導してみた

My current English skills

My skills are glowed and glowed well. No, it's a lie

Comparing the article I wrote last year, that glows without a doubt.

I can write/read sentences more fluently, I can start chatting with her in English with smaller tension.
(Anyway, I feel some tensions until talking with someone whether in English or in Japanese )

Now I have more rich vocabulary than last year.
I remember the usage of whether, I wonder / I was wondering, Go ahead, and so on.
I can explain the architecture of the application and review the code.

But I can't still listen to what she said perfectly, I need the dictionary to read what she wrote and it takes a long time.
There is long long loooooong way to understand all what she want to explain completely.

I'm still on a journey.

How she glowed

Now she is a Japanese speaker!
She communicates in Japanese with team members except for some members (who want to communicate with her in English). Awesome.
It looks like it's hard to learn kanji for her, but I believe she can remember a lot of kanji.

And she can implement the feature that she required in Flutter!
Also, she starts publishing her knowledge on Medium. What a great engineer! This is the work of engineer of 1st year.

What I tried a.k.a. Tips

Reading something / listening to something

There are many materials to learn English, but I have no time to read books or articles because I want to write code by using the time to read that material (I'm nuts you know).

But this book helps to improve my skills. Though I have only read some parts of this, but it's still helpful.

• 最低限の単語力でもてっとりばやく英語が話せる――日本人1万人を教えてわかったすぐに話せる50の方法
  • Only I read half of this, but I can learn some phrases still I'm using.

And tried to listen to some audio materials is useful too.

• NCIS seriese
  • A kind of criminal dramas.
  • When my mother watches it for fun, I try to grasp the words and comprehend what the characters said.
• Some songs translated into English we can hear in Amazon Prime Music
  • We can listen to some music like "tried to sing" (歌ってみた) in Amazon Prime Music.
  • I choose the song I know the Japanese lyrics and try to hear the singer said what.
  • My favorite is Rachie's A cruel angel's thesis
  • And AmaLee's The edge of dawn (But I still haven't play Fire Emblem)

We must use Grammarly and DeepL

I have found Grammarly and DeepL to be very useful when writing something in English.

I'm learning the correct spelling of the words and usage of the or in or on or something like that.
And I use DeepL to check the sentence I wrote can explain what I want to explain.

Using translation feature of GoogleChrome

Hum, you may feel that's strange to learn English.
But I think the hardest enemy to read English sentences is the reluctance of the reader's heart.

I use the translater of GoogleChrome first when I meet the English page.

As you know, machine translated language have the possibility of grammatical errors and mistakes and might differ in a context which eventually leads me to turn off the translator.
Now I understand some contexts, I can read without reluctance.

Don't try to translate, think

When you try to write something in English, I think it's better to start writing in English directly.

Think in English, write in English.

This is because thinking in Japanese first and translating it into English is difficult and time-consuming to find words that apply to the Japanese you have already written.
We know that we can't write sentences using words or phrases we don't know.
So, it's better to start writing only with the vocabulary you have now.

I have written this article in English first and later translated it into Japanese.

Nothing beats practice

Explaining something at the reviewing of Pull Requests,
talking with her at 1 on 1 MTG,
chatting in English at the Slack channel of my team...

These help me develop my English communication skills in abundance.
That's hard but very effective

What I got in this year

Now I'm pretty confident that I can communicate with others in English.
I know maybe I'm still inferior to the elementary school student who speaks English natively.
But I also believe that I can improve my skills in the near future.

Next, I want to work towards being able to speak and listen fluently so that I can participate in internal conferences as a speaker!
