新しい Google Maps Platform では APIキーなしの呼び出しはサポートされなくなります

Google Maps JavaScript API や Google Places API などを含む地図・位置情報関連API群が、 Google Maps Platform として、2018年6月にアップデートされます。

この変更では、主に課金体系の単純化がクローズアップされていますが、他の影響点として、

にしれっと次のような記述があります。

This will go into effect on June 11th, and keyless access will no longer be supported. At that time, keyless calls to the Maps JavaScript API and Street View API will return low-resolution maps watermarked with “for development purposes only.” Keyless calls to any of the following APIs will return an error: Maps Static API (including Static Street View), Directions API, Distance Matrix API, Geocoding API, Geolocation API, Places API, Roads API, and Time Zone API.

これによると、 APIキー無しの呼び出しは2018/6/11以降サポートされなくなります。
具体的には、

• APIキーなしの Maps JavaScript API や Street View API は、 「低解像度」で「"開発用"と透かしの入った」 地図を返す
• APIキーなしの Direction API, Places API(以下略)は、 エラーを返す

とのことです。
APIキーなしの利用は 2016年 からサポートされなくなる旨がアナウンスされていましたが、それが実効されるということです。

古くからメンテが滞っているWebアプリや、「とりあえず使ってみた」系のTipsなどは、影響を受けることになると思われるので、自身のプロダクトやコンテンツを確認してみることをおすすめします。
