仮想マシン（CentOS6）へのVMware Toolsのインストール

今更感もあるけど。
基本的にはWindows同様、利用しているVMware製品で「VMware Toolsのインストール」 からISOをマウント、依存関係にあるパッケージ（perlやgcc等）をインストールして、…というのがデフォルトではあるが、Minimalインストールだったりするとperlもgccもインストールされていなかったりする。

めんどくさいなーっていう時は、実はyum installでインストールできちゃったりするらしい。
依存関係のあるパッケージをインストールしなくて良いし、必要最低限のパッケージのみのカスタムインストールが可能。

ISOでのインストールとパッケージインストールの相違点

要はフルインストールかカスタムインストールの違い。

VMware Toolsの提供形式
      
        ISO（.tarファイルを含む）：
        製品にパッケージされている。VMware製品およびゲストOSに応じてインストール方法が異なる。
        Windows、Linux、NetWare、Solaris、及び FreeBSD
        というサポートされているゲストOSの各タイプ毎にISOタイプも異なる。
    
        OS特有のパッケージ （OSP）：
        コマンドラインからダウンロードしてインストール。軽量パッケージ。
        VMware vSphereしかサポートされていない。

vSphere以外のVMware製品を利用してる環境だと、 Toolsのインストールでyumは使えないらしい。

利用しているESXiのバージョンは関係なさそう。

ISOでインストールする時はESXiのバージョンに依存してしまうが、yumだとToolsの新バージョンを単体でインストール出来るのは魅力的。

今回は CentOS6 の環境でテスト。

Yumレポジトリ追加

localinstallを利用してレポジトリをインストールする。

$ sudo yum localinstall http://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/latest/repos/vmware-tools-repo-RHEL6-<release>.<arch>.rpm

完了すると以下のようにレポジトリが追加された。

インストールするパッケージ

X Windowがインストールされているかされていないかで選択すれば良い。

  • vmware-tools-esx
  • vmware-tools-esx-nox　（X Windowなし）
  • vmware-tools-esx-kmods（カーネルモジュール）　※現カーネルのバージョンだとインストール不要。

vmware-tools-esx-kmods は必要？

google先生で調べると、インストールしていたりしていなかったりパターンは様々だったが、少なくとも当環境下では不要。

vmware-tools-esx-kmods に含まれるパッケージは以下の通り。
vmxnetは古いVMXNETネットワークアダプター用のドライバなので、最近のOSのバージョンではあえて採用する必要はない。

また、vmci/vsockはESXi 5.1以降の環境の場合、インストールされていなくても問題ないドライバの模様。

ESXi 5.0 以前の仮想マシン通信インターフェイス (VMCI)

この設定は、ESXi 5.0 以前の仮想マシンに適用されます。ESXi 5.1 以降の仮想マシンには適用されません。

VMCI が制限されていない場合、仮想マシンは、同じホスト内の同じオプションが有効なほかの仮想マシンすべてと相互に検出し合うことができます。このインターフェイスを使用するカスタム開発されたソフトウェアには、予期しない脆弱性が発生して悪用につながる可能性があります。また、仮想マシンを登録すれば、その仮想マシンは同じ ESX/ESXi システム内にあるほかの仮想マシン数を検出できます。　
　　　

ということで、vmware-tools-esx-nox のみのインストールで問題なさそう。

インストール

インストールを実施。

$ sudo yum install vmware-tools-esx-nox

vmxnet3自体のメリットはあるんだろうけど、Linux利用する場合は調べててもカーネルアップデートとかの時に手間がかかりそうな印象なので正直敬遠していた(´-ω-`)
普通にE1000で使うほうが無難かなぁと思いE1000デフォで利用している。
（Windows Serverはvmxnet3使ってるけど）
でもvmxnet3利用するほうがパフォーマンスは良くなるんだろうなぁ。

ちょっと使ってみてまたレポしよう。

とりあえずこれで様子見。
