とりあえずいろんなテーブルに適用させようと、次のように書いたところ thead タグがないテーブルでは mData がないというエラーが出てしまいました。
foo.js.coffee
$("table").DataTable()
そこで、次のように thead を持つテーブルだけに絞るとエラーを回避できました。
foo.js.coffee
$("table:has(thead)").DataTable()
