EditメニューからPreferencesを開き、GeneralのCompress Assets on Importのチェックをはずすだけです。
ここはアセットをインポートした時に圧縮するかの設定になります。
ビルドした際はちゃんと圧縮されるのでこの設定でROMサイズが大きくなるということはありません。
確認したバージョンはUnity 5.2.0f3です。3以前でも同じ動作になります。
