ウェブ上で見つけられるVPSのスコアと比べても特に遅いということはなさそうです。
ただ以下を考慮するとやはり割高になる可能性が高いかなと感じます
・東京リージョンに来たらおそらく$5ではなくなる
・円安の影響
・$40プランまではvCPUが1 (国内VPSだと千円台から2コア以上になるものも結構ある)

ただ、S3などAWSのサービスに他より高速にアクセスできるとかそういったメリットがあるんじゃないかという気がしています。
だれかそういう検証やってくれると嬉しいなぁ。
